My journey to restful nights
It is likely that prior to following me many of you had never even heard of a Pediatric Sleep Consultant, so you are may be asking yourself (or even me through the computer screen), what the heck, Brittney? Well, I can’t say that I blame you, but I hope that after reading this post, you will have a much better idea of what drew me to this opportunity and what it is that I do as part of this journey.
When my son was a newborn, he had a short (relatively speaking) stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the University of Utah hospital. I didn’t realize it at the time, but while he was growing and developing in his tiny little hospital incubator and then crib, he was learning amazing self-soothing habits because he could not always be picked up as soon as he got upset. In addition to saving our son’s life, the nurses in the NICU were also helping our son learn one of his very first skills — how to become an independent sleeper!
We capitalized on his NICU-initiated skills and followed the advice of our (AMAZING!) pediatrician to learn more about infant sleep in order to help him to continue to grow and develop. After his 8 week check up, I went home and started searching the internet for blogs, books and tips for infant sleep. He was still so tiny that I knew we needed something gentle, and I wanted something that fit us.
Luckily, I found great reviews about Dana Obelman and The Sleep Sense™ Program, so on we went… Implement her ideas and seeing great results. Fast forward a few months and his sleep skills continued to improve, and we had a master sleeper on our hands. My husband and I had no idea how lucky we were! As first-time parents, we just assumed that all 12-week-olds were sleeping 10 hours through the night. Come to find out, that is NOT the case.
As I chatted with friends, some with children as old as early elementary school, I realized that babies, toddlers and young children are often not taught the skills necessary to “sleep through” an uninterrupted night (check out this post to see why no one, even adults, actually “sleep through the night”). I had no idea that this was slowly becoming a passion of mine, until one night I found myself Instagram searching #pleasesleepbaby and looking at picture after picture of overtired little ones, exhausted and emotional moms and families that needed help.
Becoming a Pediatric Sleep Sense™ Consultant
A few weeks later, in March 2017, the opportunity to apply for The Sleep Sense™ Consultant Training Program was presented to me, and it just felt right! I’m sure you’ve had times in your life when an opportunity presents itself and you just can’t turn it down. Well, for me, this was one of THOSE moments.
Over the course of the next few months, I was able to help friends with troubled sleepers in very informal ways by sharing tips and tricks that I had read about along the way. Then finally, in mid-August, I flew to Sarasota, Florida for a three-day training course with Dana Obelman, founder of The Sleep Sense™ Program, and 17 soon-to-be business women from around the world. We learned the ins and outs of sleep science, networking, marketing and sales.
Throughout the late summer and fall, we were mentored by Dana to further our knowledge in these areas through webinars and training sessions. Since then, I have helped over 25 families (from newborns to toddlers, and babies too) by educating and supporting them, and standing by their side as they bring sleep back into their homes!
Let’s do this!
I believe that this path is the perfect blend of my science background, my desire to educate, my ability to relate, and above all, my passion for supporting others during a challenging time in their lives. I’m excited to be starting here, taking this risk and trying something new. After all… great things never come from staying in one’s comfort zone!
